Damai Perdana residents want a real safety answer before going home

For families at Pangsapuri Damai Perdana 2, the hardest question is no longer whether they are allowed to go home. It is whether anyone has clearly told them the building is safe enough to live in.

Residents told the New Straits Times on Oct 2 that they wanted an official explanation from the apartment management and local authorities after a notice allowed them to return from Friday. Their concern is the clause that says returning is at their own risk, a phrase that sits badly a week after a landslide near Block D forced people out of their homes.

This is a follow-up to Rummah's earlier report on the evacuation. On Sept 23, Bernama reported that about 80 residents had been evacuated and that 45 units in Block D were ordered vacated while the Public Works Department, the Minerals and Geoscience Department and Kajang Municipal Council assessed structural safety.

At that time, MPKj Zone 6 councillor Tan Kah Hoe said the agencies had not yet returned findings and that the council would follow up to determine whether the building remained structurally safe for occupation. Water supply to the whole apartment complex, made up of four blocks and 360 residential units, was also temporarily suspended, with tankers to be provided.

The latest frustration is practical as much as technical. Residents quoted by NST said they had not received enough information, that water supply to Blocks C and D had been cut for a week, and that water was expected to be restored only on Oct 10. For older residents and families with children, hauling water upstairs while wondering about slope safety is not a normal return home.

The available official position still appears to be that safety depends on the technical assessment. That is exactly why the wording of any return notice matters. If residents are being asked to resume living beside a slope that failed, they need a clear finding, a named responsible authority and a plain explanation of what has been repaired or ruled safe.

Until then, “pulang atas risiko sendiri” is not a reassurance. It is a warning label.
