The rightmost lanes in both directions of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway are closed from today, 12 October 2026, until 28 February 2027 for the next phase of elevated U-turn construction near The Light Waterfront Penang.
Bernama reported that the closure affects the median-side rightmost lanes on both the George Town-bound and Bayan Lepas-bound carriageways. IJM Land Berhad, master developer of The Light Waterfront Penang, said the diversions are needed to create a safe work area for the construction team.
For buyers, tenants and agents moving between George Town, Jelutong, Gelugor and Bayan Lepas, the date range is the important bit. It covers more than four months of weekday commutes, school runs and evening viewings. Anyone scheduling appointments around The Light, Jelutong, Queensbay, Bayan Lepas or the airport side of the island should build in extra time instead of assuming the coastal highway will behave like normal.
The elevated U-turn is expected to complement the Ayer Itam bypass, according to IJM Land's statement carried by Bernama. The initial construction phase was completed in early September, and the completed U-turn is meant to improve connectivity and traffic flow along the expressway.
Motorists have been advised to plan journeys ahead, follow directional signage and use caution near the affected stretch. Further updates are expected as the works progress.
