Batu Kawan is adding another factory to the supply chain that already shapes demand for industrial land, worker housing and supporting services in mainland Penang.
Tanaka MEP Refinery Sdn Bhd has broken ground on a RM70 million facility at Batu Kawan Industrial Park, according to the Malaysian Investment Development Authority. MIDA said the plant is planned as Malaysia's first 4N precious-metal refining factory, producing high-purity metals at 99.99% purity for electrical and electronics and semiconductor uses.
The site is about three acres, with a built-up area of 45,000 sq ft. Commercial operations are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2029. Phase 1, according to MIDA's statement, will focus RM35 million on producing 4N high-purity gold and potassium gold cyanide, both used by electronics and semiconductor manufacturers.
For Batu Kawan, the property relevance is not a housing-price claim. It is employment land use. Penang has been stacking specialised suppliers around the same industrial geography, and this one is a materials-recovery and refining node rather than another assembly plant. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said in the statement that the facility adds an ecosystem partner to Penang's E&E and semiconductor base.
The wider investment backdrop is also firm. MIDA said Malaysia's manufacturing sector recorded RM51.3 billion in approved investments across 973 projects in the first half of 2026, expected to create 64,555 jobs. Penang accounted for RM17.3 billion of approved manufacturing investments in that period, up 38.1% from a year earlier.
So for agents and investors tracking Batu Kawan, this is one more piece of the industrial-demand map: modest in land size, but high in supply-chain specificity. Jangan overread it as a residential call. The hard fact is narrower and still useful: a three-acre, RM70 million facility is moving into the park with a 2029 operating target.
