27 Kubang Pasu homes hit by floods after rivers overflow

Floodwater entered 27 homes in four Kubang Pasu villages after heavy rain caused rivers to overflow into residential areas and roads, according to the district Civil Defence Force.

Kosmo reported Kubang Pasu APM officer Captain Mohd Adenin Suhaimi as saying the affected areas were Kampung Changkat Setol, Kampung Sungai Petani, Kampung Padang and Kampung Belukar. Eight homes were affected in Kampung Changkat Setol, six in Kampung Sungai Petani, five in Kampung Padang and eight in Kampung Belukar.

The count is small beside a state-wide disaster, but it is the kind of flood that matters immediately to households: furniture lifted before dawn, mud left behind, and families deciding whether to sleep elsewhere even when no official relief centre is opened.

Mohd Adenin said some victims in Kampung Changkat Setol moved to homestays or relatives' houses. He also said water levels in Kampung Sungai Petani, Kampung Padang and Kampung Belukar were trending down, river levels were under control and no temporary evacuation centre had been opened at the time of the report.

A Kampung Belukar resident, Mohammad Irsyadi Darus, told Kosmo his house began taking in water at about 2am after heavy rain around Bukit Kachi and Universiti Utara Malaysia in Sintok. He said water on the road reached thigh level, while water inside the house was around ankle height.

APM, the Muda Agricultural Development Authority, the Drainage and Irrigation Department, police, firefighters and village leaders remained on standby, according to the report.
