RM312.97m Engkilili plant to raise Sri Aman water capacity

Sri Aman is getting a new RM312.97 million water treatment plant in Engkilili, with the Sarawak government saying the project will add 75 million litres a day of treated-water capacity when completed in May 2028.

The Sarawak Public Communications Unit, UKAS, said in a 26 September 2026 report that the project began in May 2025 and is fully funded by the state government through the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak. The Rural Water Supply Department, JBALB Sarawak, is the implementing agency.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the plant is meant to meet rising demand in Sri Aman and surrounding areas, while also supporting the existing Bayai Water Treatment Plant. DayakDaily and Sarawak Tribune carried the same capacity, cost and completion timeline, citing UKAS.

The project is property-relevant because treated-water reliability is one of the basic constraints on where households, shops and small industries can function. A new road can shorten a trip, but a weak water network changes daily life inside the home: storage tanks, pressure problems, interruptions and the cost of coping with them.

Julaihi said the ministry would monitor the project so that it stays on schedule. The practical date for residents and businesses is therefore May 2028. Until then, the existing system still has to carry demand in Sri Aman, Engkilili and nearby areas.
