How much will the ECRL cost you? Fares from RM60 to Kuantan and RM125 to Kota Bharu

If you have been weighing a home, a family visit or a weekend routine on the east coast against the drive up the highway, the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) has finally given you the number you need. Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) chief executive Datuk Seri Darwis Abdul Razak announced the fares on 19 October 2026 at the Gombak Integrated Terminal station, according to Utusan Malaysia and Sinar Harian.

When we wrote in early October that ticket sales were expected in November, there were no prices. Now there are. These are the one-way fares from Gombak:

  • KotaSAS, Kuantan (209km): RM60 on the Transit service, RM68 on Express
  • Kuala Terengganu (378km): RM95 Transit, RM110 Express
  • Kota Bharu (523km): RM125 Transit, RM147 Express

The difference between the two services is the stops. Transit calls at every scheduled station; Express stops only at Gombak, KotaSAS, Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bharu. The same fares apply in the other direction.

The discounts matter more than the headline fare

MRL has approved half-price fares for children aged two to 12, senior citizens aged 60 and above, OKU cardholders and retired government employees, and 40% off for students aged 13 to 24, Utusan reported. So a parent travelling from Gombak to Kuantan on Transit with two primary-school children pays RM60 plus RM30 plus RM30, or RM120 one way for the three of them. A 20-year-old student on the same trip pays RM36.

Darwis said the fares "take into account the balance between people's affordability, value of service offered and long-term operational sustainability" (translated).

When you can actually ride

Tickets go on sale in mid-November 2026, and commercial service is planned for mid-December, subject to safety approvals. Before that, fault-free running tests start on 23 October and trial operations follow in November, Sinar Harian reported.

Once running, there will be 12 trips a day from Monday to Thursday and 16 from Friday to Sunday, split evenly between the two directions. Ten electric trains will run at up to 160km/h, and Gombak to Kota Bharu should take under three and a half hours at full speed. MRL is aiming for 1.4 million passengers in 2027, about 60% of the 2.2 million seats on offer.

Two things to keep in mind if the line is part of a property decision. The starting date still depends on safety approval, so a mid-December target is not a guarantee. And the frequencies are modest: six trains each way on a weekday is a long-distance service, not a commuter train, so it suits weekly or weekend travel better than a daily trip to work.
